Amazon's made its plans to become a fashion powerhouse quite clear. "Our aim is to make Amazon the best place to buy fashion online," Sergio Bucher, VP of Amazon Fashion Europe, said in a statement last year.
Now Re/code shares some fascinating stats that show how Amazon is trying to make that goal a reality. Here's how Re/code breaks it down:
- If you can't picture 30 million items... think of it as the equivalent of the total number of items sold in around 250 Walmart supercenters combined.
- Fashion at Amazon is catching up to gadgets. According to Re/code, there's a bigger selection in apparel and accessories categories than Amazon’s electronics catalogue. The only categories with more year to year growth in numbers of units available is the home and kitchen category and cell phone category.
= Watch out, department stores. Equity research analysts Cowen and Company created projections indicating that by next year, Amazon could pass Macy’s to become the biggest seller of clothing in the US.
