Hunger for Organic Foods Stretches Supply Chain

Last year, executives at organic cereal maker Nature’s Path Foods Inc. grew so frustrated with organic-grain shortfalls that they took a radical step: They bought a farm. 

The three-decade-old Canadian company plunked down more than $2 million for 2,800 acres of Montana cropland, part of an effort to seize greater control of its supplies of wheat, oats and other ingredients. “We just want to secure our own future,” said founderArran Stephens. READ ON.

 McDonald’s Commits To Zero Deforestation Throughout Its Entire Supply Chain

On Tuesday, McDonald’s announced that it would end deforestation throughout its entire supply chain, a move that will affect the company’s beef, poultry, palm oil, coffee, and packaging. The company will start taking steps to implement more sustainable practices immediately, with the goal of ending deforestation in its supply chain completely by 2030.

“I think its a really huge step,” Lael Goodman, analyst for the Tropical Forest and Climate Initiative at the Union of Concerned Scientists, told ThinkProgress, “especially coming from a fast food giant.” READ ON.
