ITF International Freight Model Presentation

February 16, 2015
The ITF International Freight Model makes it possible to convert projections of future trade in value into flows of freight. It is able to express the value of trade (in monetary terms) in volume (the total distance all goods are moved, measured in tonne-kilometres). The model allows the assignment of freight volume to routes by transport mode, and the calculation of related CO2 emissions. ITF developed a model based on a global freight network model (using actual routes and related real distances) that converts trade in value into freight volumes in tonne-kilometres and related CO2 emissions by transport mode and route for the period 2010-2050 for 26 regions and 25 product groups depending on alternative trade liberalisation scenarios. The model allows estimations of freight performed by road or rail from/to ports to/from consumption/production centres. This model allows a good identification not only of emissions but also of future transport needs. The model was presented to ITF Corporate Board Partners in Paris, France on 11 February 2015.
